Edit Locking

EVA Netmodeler provides for information sharing and collaboration. Where users are viewing data this is not a problem. Where information is captured or altered, conflicts can occur. Say Joe retrieves a Business Unit item called Operations and updates the property NextYearBudget. Before he submits his changes, another user, Mary, also retrieves the item Operations. She changes the property TelephoneNumber. Depending upon who submits the changed item first, only the change to Buget or to Telephone number may be retained. EVA Netmodeler will prevent this sort of conflict by locking items which are retrieved for editing (i.e. when a user uses the edit button). A locked item may be retrieved and viewed by other users, but not updated. If an update attempt is made by another user, they will be informed that the item is currently locked and they should try again later.

EVA Netmodeler also provides for timing out edit locks - this is so that an item does not remain locked indefinitely should a user enter edit mode and then not complete the operation timeously (e.g. you may be interrupted by a telephone call and not return to your editing for some time..)  Once a certain time has elapsed, EVA Netmodeler can remove the lock to allow other users to have access to the item. If you have lost the edit lock and subsequently try to update the item, you will be informed that you have lost the lock and will need to edit again. If this occurs, you can retrieve your edit values by hitting the browser back button. EVA Netmodeler uses the release intelligently and will not time out locks unless there is another user requesting the item and your time limit has expired. The amount of time to wait is determined by a system setting which the administrator of the system can adjust.
