Error and Warning (Walkback) Log

EVA Netmodeler has a sophisticated error detection and handling system. All errors encountered can potentially be logged to the error and warning log, in Smalltalk parlance, the Walkback log. This name derives from the ability to "walk back" from the error condition through the activities leading up to that point to determine the precise cause of the error.

When an error occurs, EVA Netmodeler first determines if any special behaviour is required. It will normally then display the error summary details to the user with a link to the full detail. It will also log the incident on the walkback log it manages on the server. There are system settings to determine where the log is kept, how big it may grow and what to do when it gets full (Usually open a new one and continue logging). System administrators can define Error Exclusion items which control how certain types of errors are handled. These can specify full logging (default, but somewhat resource heavy on occurrence), light logging - just enough to know what occurred, or no logging. This behaviour can be customised per type of error encountered.

The error log itself is written as a file with an entry per error incident. EVA Netmodeler provides a viewing tool for the log which lists the errors as a table of contents at the front and then lets you follow a link to the specific error report that you want to see. It is also possible to reset the log from this tool.

The walkback entry can be sent as text to support personnel to help in quickly diagnosing a problem.
